I think it goes beyond that with psychopaths. I think they get a rush out of lying (called “duping delight”). My ex-P lied constantly, and many of those lies were not necessary at all and some actually did the opposite of furthering his agenda; they worked against him. So I believe for him lying was just an easy form of entertainment.
