From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Scapegoat is somebody who is blamed, although they are usually innocent. Often, we as individuals blame other people when things go wrong. Scapegoating  is a recent coinage for the practice of singling out any party for unmerited negative treatment or blame. Scapegoating may be conducted by individuals against individuals, individuals against groups, groups against individuals, and groups against groups.

Scapegoating at the individual level:

“Process in which the mechanisms of projection or displacement are utilised in focusing feelings of aggression, hostility, frustration, etc., upon another individual or group; the amount of blame being unwarranted.”
